I have been rather healthy, fit and trim all of my life. I've always been an exerciser. Walking, running, tennis, elliptical, step aerobics, yoga, muscle toning have played their part in my fitness life. In my mid-30’s, I gave birth to two children and returned to my pre-pregnancy weight and fitness level.

When I hit my early 40's, I noticed that exercising more and trying to eat less just didn't prevent the weight gain of 1-2 pounds a year. I figured that by the time I turned 50, I would be at least 10 pounds heavier. Then it might continue from there.  It's not just about the weight gain; my mood was affected because I didn't feel in control anymore. I wasn't as positive as I had always been.

I read many health articles and books and tried a few healthy dietary approaches where your meals and snacks were suggested. It didn't work.
I was hesitant to spend the money on nutritional counseling. After all, you’re spending money and getting nothing material in return – just advice! So, I participated in several of Amy’s free phone seminars. I learned about cleansing, boosting energy levels, and minimizing cravings. I loved her gentle, non-radical approach. I wasn’t going to have to give up meat and live on dandelion greens!

I enlisted Amy’s support for 6 months and I am very happy, even somewhat amazed, with the results. Within a couple of months, I returned to my pre-pregnancy weight. I fit back into that stack of “hope to wear these again” clothing. I lost any cravings for sugar. I felt in control and have become more positive towards other areas of my life. You see, the holistic approach doesn’t simply focus on the food that you eat. It touches many areas of your life that affect your overall health and well-being.

Initially I signed up for Amy’s coaching for the nutrition information.  I was also thinking that it would be a fantastic investment to make some changes/improvements in the months as I was approaching my 30th birthday. 

I was excited for her nutritional information, supplemental packages, and unlimited contact for support through email and bi-monthly phone sessions.  Looking back over the 6 months we worked together, the introduction of extra vegetables, greens, whole grains, etc will forever change my diet and eating patterns.  But overall the biggest impact has come from the lifestyle changes. 

The most important lesson was the practice of setting goals and specifying steps to work on to achieve them.  With Amy’s support, I saw the following results:  changed my eating patterns, took time to relax and decrease stress, increased my sleep, tried new activities, started dating again and have become involved in a serious relationship, increased my motivation, and became more aware of the positive aspects of my life.

I am very thankful to Amy for all she did for me while I was working with her. Previous to our connection, I had always wanted to be motivated enough to participate in a regular exercise program, but just couldn’t get myself to do it.  Through our discussions, she encouraged me to check out Curves and see what it was like. I hesitated for a few weeks, but finally went ahead and now I have been going faithfully 4-5 times a week for the last 6 months!  Here I am now feeling so much better, made new friends and I can now wear size 12 jeans!!  (That’s progress for me!)

I was hesitant about hiring someone as a life coach because I felt like I could or should be able to figure out health and wellness concerns on my own. "I'm a student in public health" I thought, "I should know this stuff!" When I first came to Amy for help and guidance I could not quite figure out which aspect of my life felt worse. Was it my weight? My lack of energy? My mood swings? The only thing I knew for sure was that I was unhappy.

I am no stranger to the diet and exercise movement. Since the early 1980s, I have tried and failed with every trend imaginable. We started slowly, identifying one by one areas of my life that felt lacking or stagnant. With Amy’s guidance and support I asked the tough questions and went home every week with a tool to help with the answers. What struck me most about our work together was the fact that I learned something new and critical every single session.

Holistic counseling has provided me with a paradigm shift. I no longer look at my life in pieces. Prior to working with Amy, I had a “perfectionist” approach to eating and exercising.  If I couldn’t do it the way I thought it should be done 100% of the time I wouldn’t do it.  That way of life left me overweight, tired and getting migraines every month.  I knew I deserved better and my family deserved better but I wasn’t sure how to go about it.

Through our sessions, Amy provided the guidance I needed to get in tune with my body and really pay attention to how my lifestyle was affecting my health.    Amy listened to my concerns and provided me with easy and manageable goals each session.  She helped me connect my eating habits to the sugar cravings I was experiencing which was connected to my low energy and migraines.  She encouraged me to be kind to myself by devoting time to me as well as to my family.   I never felt overwhelmed by Amy’s approach, just nurtured and supported.

Each session, I looked forward to the recipes and information Amy provided.  I discovered the world of whole grains and dark, leafy greens and have been able to incorporate them into my family’s diet.  I have two young children and wasn’t sure how they would like some of the new foods I was preparing.  Amy was ready with tasty variations and information about the nutritional value and boost they would give to us.  People are always amazed at the foods my family eats and enjoys. 

Thanks to Amy, my life is now about balance, not perfection.  My migraines are gone, my energy is up and if I desire a sweet treat, it does not turn into an all out binge.  Amy has started me on a wonderful journey that will continue for the rest of my life.
