Staying Cool
With the heat wave that’s been affecting the whole country, my clients have been wondering how to stay cool. I don’t know about you, but I find extreme heat to be physically and mentally exhausting. I’ve put together some tips for keeping both your body and mind cool during the month of August.
- While you may be drawn to drink ice cold water, drink hot liquids and take warm showers. This will induce sweating and cool the body. Summer heat combined with too much cold food will actually weaken your digestive system.
- Incorporate some hot-flavored spices (fresh ginger, horseradish, cayenne red pepper, etc.) to your food. Like with the warm showers and hot liquids, the spices will initially increase warmth, but ultimately they will bring body heat out to the surface to be dispersed. And, with heat on the surface of your body, you will be less affected by the summer climate.
- Things that grow quicker are considered cooling foods. Eat salads and vegetables that grow above ground such as lettuce, watercress, peas and beans.
- Foods that are deeper in green, blue, or purple colors are more cooling than similar foods that are red, orange, or yellow (red apples are warmer than green apples).
- Eat more raw, cold, and refrigerated foods. Avoid baking or deep-frying.
- Get plenty of water. This can been through drinking it or EATING it. Yes, you can actually eat water by consuming apples, celery, cucumbers, grapefruit, grapes, shellfish, and (my favorite) watermelon. Remember to hydrate BEFORE you get thirsty. By the time you’re thirsty, you are already dehydrated.
- While an iced tea or a frozen margarita may sound very tempting on a hot summer day, avoiding alcohol and caffeine will help keep you hydrated and cool. For every caffeinated or alcoholic beverage you drink, you should drink 2 times the amount of water.
